Wintergreen Essential Oil

Wintergreen essential oil happens to be the oil of surrender, and its' sourcing story is one of triumph over devastating circumstances.

doTERRA began sourcing Wintergreen in Nepal in 2014 when the districts that produce this oil were hit the hardest by the earthquakes. The areas producing the oil experienced the most damage in the country from these natural disasters, and doTERRA was able to help lift this community out of poverty. Watch the two sourcing videos at the bottom of this post to witness this incredible story.

You may just cry watching the sourcing video, I know I do each time I watch because it's amazing to know that in using these oils we are directly supporting these families in Nepal. In addition to doTERRA providing jobs in an area with a general lack of opportunity, they rebuilt earthquake-proof homes and received donations of over $650,000 from wellness advocates for the earthquakes.

Due to the general lack of professional opportunities for Nepalese women, doTERRA primarily employs female harvesters for Wintergreen harvesting. The conscious thought that has gone into each step of this business is why it has been so successful because it's mutually benefitting the highest good for so many people.

Wintergreen has an incredibly low yield, which means it takes a lot of plant matter to produce the oil, about 5 pounds for a 15 ml bottle of oil. This is actually a good thing because this is an invasive species that needs to be cleared frequently as it takes over the landscape it's grown in.

The oil production benefits not only us as consumers who use the oil, but it also benefits the people producing it and the earth. It's a win, win, win.

Fun fact: the main chemical constituent found in Wintergreen, Methyl salicylate, is related to the chemical that makes aspirin. In the same way, this oil physically supports muscle pain relief. It's a hot oil, however, so you'll want to dilute it with a carrier oil before applying it topically. Because of its warming properties, it can be used to increase circulation to cold extremities.

Wintergreen is such a versatile oil that supports everything from teeth whitening to dermatitis and dandruff. It should be noted this oil is not safe to be taken internally.

Wintergreen essential oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic benefits, which means it can support healing from arthritis, joint pain, neuralgia, cramps, bone spurs, cartilage injury/bruising, rotator cuff issues, and frozen shoulder. It's found in doTERRA's Deep Blue Soothing muscle blend for these exact properties.

This sweet and refreshing aroma is perfect for diffusing to freshen up a room, and spiritually it's the oil of surrender. It takes a lot of strength to surrender to faith and let go of control, and this oil teaches strong-willed individuals that they don't need to be self-reliant. it teaches that they have support from a higher power that knows what's best.

When you feel burdened and like you must control everything, use 1-2 drops of Wintergreen diluted with your preferred oil over your heart and diffuse it.

You open yourself to so much divine support that's available to you when you let go in this way. Use the multi-purpose Wintergreen to support your physical and spiritual health! This is an oil I frequently use in all of these ways.
