Tangerine has been used in Chinese culture and health practices, for its cleansing and antioxidant properties. Tangerine is the oil of cheer and creativity, and it boosts the lowest of moods. Here's everything you need to know about Tangerine essential oil!
Tangerine gets its name from the tree it originated from in Morocco, in the seaport city of Tangier. Tangerine actually translates to "from Tangier," and as the tree grew in popularity and was brought to Europe and Americas. It's the sweetest of citrus fruits, and second in popularity to the sweet orange.
doTERRA sources its Tangerine essential oil from Italy and Brazil, where it grows in abundance on the Citrus Reticulata tree, an evergreen that bears bright orange fruit with white blossoms. It takes about 9 pounds of Tangerine peel to produce a 15ml bottle of essential oil, and the oil is extracted using cold compression.
Like other citrus oils, Tangerine has a high concentration of the chemical constituent, limonene. This boosts mood by managing stress, and it's also energizing, making this the perfect oil to diffuse first thing in the morning, and before working out. Tangerine is found in doTERRA's Elevation Joyful blend and Citrus Bliss Invigorating blend for these reasons!
Physically, Tangerine supports the respiratory system, digestive system, and immune system, especially when taken internally, either in water or in a veggie cap.* Its chemical constituent myrcene, gives it immune boosting properties, so adding a few drops to hot water and sipping this during the winter is a great idea.
This oil has sedative properties too so diffusing it at night is the perfect way to wind down and relax. Tangerine essential oil is a photosensitive essential oil like most citrus oils, so it's best not to apply it when heading outdoors and spending time in the sun.
Used in baking and cooking, Tangerine essential oil is a sweet flavoring that can be added to morning smoothies, lemonade, juices, or tea when you need some extra flavor. Check out this delicious recipe for Tangerine Cranberry Scones to give you an idea of how to add this flavoring to your recipes.
My favorite way to use Tangerine essential oil is to stimulate creativity and inspiration. Sometimes, even while working on our passion projects, we can feel overburdened with responsibilities. When we come from that place, creativity can be stifled from an excessive sense of duty.
Tangerine invites us to make more room for play, joy, and spontaneity. This helps to let go of rigid standards we put on ourselves and feelings of being overly responsible. Hello perfectionism! In doing so, it allows for creative flow and cheerfulness, like what we experienced in childhood. I've experienced it instantly shift sadness and irritability. Using this oil aromatically or topically on wrists, over heart, or over the sacral chakra helps to stimulate these feelings of optimism and joy.
Tangy and fresh Tangerine essential oil is one you'll want on hand for supporting your creative practices, uplifting your emotions, and supporting your physical well-being!
