Sandalwood is the quintessential essential oil, it's found in so many of doTERRA's blends that support all different wellness needs, such as focus, insect repellent, sleep support, non-toxic perfume, and more. This recognizable woody aroma is the base of most incense. If I'm being honest, Sandalwood may be my favorite single essential oil.
Sandalwood essential oil has been used for spiritual devotion for centuries in religious rituals, meditation, and even for ancient Egyptian embalming purposes. I've made exotic incense with Sandalwood oil (though it does take a lot of oil, I like this recipe) and added oils such Vetiver, Bergamot and Patchouli for a ground root chakra healing blend.
Sandalwood essential oil is good for healthy skin and hair, positive mood, connection to our spiritual self, and much more that I'll cover in this post!
Sandalwood trees grow in tropical locations including India, Hawaii, Indonesia, Nepal, and Australia. These trees are among the most expensive trees in the world and the oil is considered precious.
Sandalwood essential oil is sourced from the core of the heartwood of the tree, or the oldest, most central wood of the tree. The heartwood of the tree is typically a darker and harder wood that produces an essential oil with a sweet, woody aroma. It takes up to 15 years to harvest before producing the oil!
What I find most interesting about this essential oil, is how it's sourced at doTERRA, where there's two varieties: Indian and Hawaiian. Each has it's own distinct aroma: with Indian you've got a smell that's dry and sweet, and with Hawaiian you've got a smell that's rich and honey-like.

I personally prefer Indian Sandalwood because to me, it has that classic woody aroma, but I love how the Hawaiian variety is unique in a lighter and airy way.
In terms of the difference between their benefits, both the Hawaiian and Indian Sandalwood essential oil expand the sixth (brow) chakra. The Hawaiian variety is more supportive of upper chakras, while the Indian variety supports deeper grounding in the lower chakras.
Physically, Sandalwood is made up of the chemical constituent santalol which helps beautify skin and hair. You can make an at-home spa treatment by adding a few drops of oil to a bowl of steaming water, then putting a towel over your head. This will rejuvenate skin and relax you. Sandalwood helps make hair shiny too, so adding a few drops to wet hair to hydrate it and add silky shine.
It's incredibly relaxing, so using a few drops in your body lotion or diffusing it at bed-time will help calm racing thoughts with its grounding properties. Sandalwood even has anti-depressant qualities, so it can support with sad feelings and lead to feelings of inspiration.
Spiritually, Sandalwood is the oil of sacred devotion, and assists with prayer, meditation and any kind of spiritual worship. It teaches us to let go of materialism so that we can truly progress spiritually. Sandalwood essential oil assists with quieting the mind so that we can hear the subtle voice of spirit.
This ancient essential oil is a classic staple, and learning more about how its produced in Hawaii for doTERRA in the sourcing video below will make you appreciate it even more. Try both the Hawaiian and Indian Sandalwood varieties yourself, and experience these healing, meditative and inspiring oils.
