Okay this is seriously uncanny, every time I sit down to write one of these essential oil spotlights, I realize that I've been intuitively drawn to working with the oil I'm writing about the whole week prior! Such divine timing.
And I realized this because I don't quite love mint aroma or flavor usually, however, 1. that means I could use it! and 2. I'm using Peppermint right now because it's the oil of a buoyant heart and it's helping to manage difficult emotions. With transitions in my life, I'm looking for ways to process emotions in a healthy way and they can sometimes be a lot to manage. Peppermint reminds us that life can be happy and we don't need to be controlled by fear (for me, it's fear of the unknown that I'm working to manage!).
This oil helps in mind body and spirit to lift you out of emotional trials for a short reprieve. Almost as though gliding on the surface of emotional issues, such as discouragement and despair. It renews strength and optimism, and the joy of being alive. It doesn't teach you to avoid pain, rather to regain the strength needed to face it.
In this way it's a support for addiction, where people usually turn to other negative habits/sources to seek reprieve from difficult emotions. It’s popularly used to reduce sad and anxious feelings, calm emotions, soothe away tension, and relieve restlessness.
Especially in the winter, when there's less sunlight, I like to take a few drops in my water and diffuse it at the start of my day.* It awakens all of my senses, much better than coffee would!
The highest concentration of menthol (its chemical constituent) in Peppermint is found in doTERRA's essential oil, making it a hot oil you'll want to dilute if applying topically. It's the best-selling oil at doTERRA and fun fact: you receive a free full size bottle of Peppermint each year just for being a member! Learn more about becoming a member here.
It's a powerful healer in the mind and physical realm, as it supports healthy respiratory function, digestive function and seasonal discomfort. That's why it's found in so many of the blends at doTERRA: Breathe Respiratory blend, DigestZen® Digestive blend, PastTense® Tension Blend®, Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend®, Deep Blue Soothing Blend®, and AromaTouch Massage Blend®.
You can see it supports a multitude of our physical health, especially its ability to soothe tension, both physically and emotionally. For headaches and migraines, you'll want to dilute this oil with fractionated coconut oil and apply directly to temples, above ears and back of neck.
It's perfect for flavoring cooking and baking, you get pure mint! I love to make hot peppermint cacao and black bean peppermint brownies (recipe from doTERRA below under how to use!).
For cravings between meals, inhale or take one drop on tongue*. Peppermint essential oil is very cooling, which makes it a great support for burns, fevers, hotflashes and sunburns. It's very stimulating and helps with energy, alertness, and memory issues.
doTERRA sources its' Peppermint essential oil from the Pacific North West in the U.S. and you can see from the sourcing video below just how sophisticated the distillery is. It has the highest menthol content, because they wait for the plants to mature.
The owner of the distillery even says they could make way more oil and make more money by using less mature Peppermint but they commit to the highest quality only! Peppermint essential oil is a staple and usually one of your first introductions to essential oils, due to its versatility.
Even though I'm not a mint person, I find myself turning to this invigorating oil for energy, mood support, addiction support, and tension support. There are over 600 published studies about the benefits of peppermint!
