Melissa essential oil, also known as Lemon Balm, is one of the most rare and expensive essential oils. It received the name Melissa because of its' sweet citrus aroma which attracts bees, and Melissa is Greek for honey bee. How cool is that?
It's been used in traditional European healthcare for over 2000 years, and the emperor Charlemagne is said to have ordered Melissa grown in the herb gardens in his empire.
The leaves are edible on the Melissa plant, they're used in baking and presentation on dishes, and it's where the essential oil is distilled from. It requires 22 pounds of plant matter in order to fill one 5 ml bottle, which is why it's so expensive. It's incredible benefits for mind body health make it more than worthy of this price tag.
Melissa is an anti-viral support, helping us when healing from fevers, colds, viral infections, cold sores, herpes, and even bug bites, stings, and warts.
It has soothing properties, for both mind and body, due to its' chemical constituent beta-caryophellene. For example, for eczema applying this essential oil diluted with coconut oil provides calming relief.
For allergies, using Melissa on the bottoms of feet, applied to bridge of nose, or taken in a capsule helps to provide relief.
I would say what I love to use Melissa for the most is for it's stress and nervous system support, it's why I always make sure to have some on hand. It supports healing from depression, anxiety and shock, and you can get these benefits from apply to back of neck ears, diffusing or applying to roof of mouth and holding for 5-10 seconds. For vertigo, take in a capsule or apply behind ears and back of neck.*
