Lavender is one of the most used essential oils in the world, and it's referred to as the Swiss army knife of essential oils - that's how versatile it is! It's been used for centuries, with the ancient Romans and Egyptians often used Lavender oil aromatically for relaxation purposes. While it's a calming oil for many, it's actually a stimulant for around 1% of the population. Including myself!
You can imagine my surprise when I stocked up on Lavender essential oil to soothe anxious feelings and support sleep, only to find myself wide awake and energized instead. However this didn't stop me at all from using Lavender in so many other ways.
Lavender means "to wash" in Latin, which is truly how it acts in wound care and all things calming. When diffused, Lavender has the ability to purify the air and effectively, "clean" it. It has astringent, regenerative and antibacterial properties, which all support healing, in particular skin wounds.
I like to use Lavender on sun burns, scars, cooking burns, cuts, blisters, bug bites and even styes on my inner eye lids (I apply it to temples, not directly on eyes). It has an immediate cooling and soothing effect for wounds.
Lavender also has antihistamine properties, making it a great support for allergies and hay fever. I take internally in the Tri Ease Seasonal relief softgels, which include Lemon and Peppermint essential oils too. You can easily make your own veggie cap with Lavender oil in it too.
Lavender helps with migraines and headaches (it's found in the Past Tense Tension blend that I use all the time for headaches), pinkeye and nosebleeds.
I'm very fascinated by the spiritual properties of Lavender essential oil, which help to open and balance the throat chakra. It's the oil of communication and calm, and aids in clear verbal expression by calming the mind.
This oil addresses a deep fear of being seen and heard. It helps those that hide their innermost thoughts and true self-expression for fear of being rejected. There is a constant tension and constriction from the true voice that's trapped within. This type of expression isn't connected to the heart or soul, and strong feelings of being unlovable, unimportant, or unheard can be at the root of this.
I've definitely experienced this at different points in my life, and many times people have learned to disconnect from their true self because of past painful experiences. So I love that Lavender encourages emotional honesty, and supports communicating our deepest thoughts and feelings, in order to share our true self with others. The throat chakra is all about authentic expression, and when it's blocked we get cut off from our true self expression. Lavender is a great way to communicate authentically and courageously.
