Over the years of teaching others how to take care of themselves through sharing what I'm doing, I've realized that there are actually so many natural ways to take care of ourselves, that mimic nature, using things like heat, cold, pressure and light, (and of course plants) for healing on all levels. These therapies are non-invasive, affordable, and effective, with no side effects. Yes please!
A few months ago I was looking for ways to upgrade my self-care, and put some new routines in place. I tried float therapy once last winter, and while it was just my first time which plays a factor in how effective it's going to be, I realized how important the entire experience from start to finish is, from the facilities, to the staff, to the equipment, in order to get the full benefits from the session.
So after a few tries in a couple local studios for float therapy, all with meh experiences, I was so happy to find Frost and Float Spa in Newton, MA. Everything from their beautiful space, to their top of the line equipment, and most important: the friendly and supportive staff, makes this a truly healing experience every time. This is my go-to happy place!
Since they're the first spa in New England to offer Cryotherapy, Float Therapy, and Infrared Sauna all in one place, this is a convenient one-stop shop. And thanks to Frost and Float, I was offered their LED Light Therapy and NormaTec Compression services to share my experiences with you in this post. They offer great packages, both beginner and combo, that allow you to try many of the services at a discounted price. My experiences for each below will help you choose what's best for you right now.
Float therapy is essentially floating in a pod of 1000 pounds of Epsom salt, where your body is completely supported by the water and salt. It can take some getting used to, after you release as you don't have to try and hold your head up over the water! This buoyancy releases pressure and tension held in your muscles, and is a deeply relaxing experience where you enter an altered state of consciousness.
This is what intrigued me the most when I first heard about floating.
Float tanks are also called Isolation tanks or sensory deprivation tanks, as the lights are turned off and the cover can close onto the pod. While my first experience was relaxing, my second experience was when I actually reached a healing meditative state, I was able to release anxious feelings and I got so many creative ideas for my business that came through. It was like I was tapping into a creative source after my mind and body were stilled and all distractions taken away, a true state of deep relaxation.
Repeating the affirmation "I'm safe all is well" helped me to really settle in and release any discomfort, choose one that works for you!
There are scientific and anecdotal backed ways that float therapy supports: stress reduction, anxiety relief, sports recovery, post traumatic stress disorder, pain relief, promote relaxation, reduce headaches, increased circulation, more restful sleep, and a deeper meditation practice. I like how Frost and Float provide gel ear plugs so you can mold it to your ear and they don't fall out, small touches like this make such a difference.
The benefits increase with each session over time, and I noticed such a difference in my stress management with anxiety and tension, that I'm going to add floating to my monthly wellness routine and self-care must have. I could really see how this would support healing from PTSD in a natural way, you feel incredibly safe, relaxed and supported.
I also noticed that my skin is super soft and exfoliated from the salts after so that's an added bonus. 90% of US population is magnesium deficient because of the soil our food is grown (and this deficiency causes stress) so imagine all the magnesium that's being absorbed into your body from the Epsom salt!
I recommend floating regularly if you are highly sensitive/empathic person (like me) or dealing with stress and anxiety (pretty much everyone in modern society now). I find you are able to get clear solutions by being in this deeply relaxed state, away from any stimulation, it's an incredibly spiritual experience.
During my doTERRA cleanse a few months ago, I added some extra detox activities like infrared sauna to support the elimination of toxins from the essential oils and supplements.
This Sunlighten bed works more efficiently than a sauna room, because it doesn't get too stifling hot by heating the air in the room, instead the bed uses infrared rays with ventilation that heats your body's core. Sunlighten is a brand that has developed heating technologies to meet rigorous standards with low emf emissions (virtually zero) - see the results here. Be sure to do your research before using infrared saunas at a spa or when purchasing to make sure they have low emf, that can be harmful to your body in large doses.
Fun fact: detox from an infrared sauna is 7 to 10 times greater than a conventional sauna. In a conventional sauna the average person sweats out 3% toxins and 97% water. In an infrared sauna, the average person sweats out 20% toxins and 80% water!
Since infrared rays heat the body and penetrate deeply, unlike other saunas, which heat the air around you, this allows for detoxifying sweat at the cellular level. When the body is being heated at high temperatures, the heart works harder to cool down, increasing circulation which causes your body to burn calories, sweat and lower blood pressure. A Sunlighten infrared sauna session can burn up to 200-600 calories!
What I like about Frost & Float is they have an Alexa in the room that you can ask to turn on any type of music you want, as well as a calming Himalayan salt lamp. Far infrared saunas have been shown to have a positive effect on stress reduction, pain management, skin purification, detoxification and weight-loss, amongst other things.
After using the bed for a little over 30 minutes and working up a lot of sweat, I felt really energized and calm at the same time. While I went to detox, it also helped me de-stress as I let go of tension stored in my muscles and balanced cortisol levels. Physical and emotional pain are interrelated. I'm going to add this to my next group cleanse program coming this winter so stay tuned! I kept sweating for an hour after so make sure to wait until then to shower.
If you're looking to detox on a regular basis, as well as manage pain and stress, this one's for you. Also if you're not able to exercise due to injury or illness, this is a great option to supplement with as you experience the same effects!
Normatec Compression Therapy
Normatec compression therapy was created a physician bioengineer to enhance blood flow and speed recovery by using three patented techniques—pulsing, distal release, and gradients, which creates pressure so the blood can distribute to the sore muscles and the lactic acid which cause release for fast recovery.
Normatec also supports pain management, Lady Gaga has been shown using it for fibromyalgia support, as well as Simon Biles and Cristiano Ronaldo for sports recovery.
Compression can be used on different areas of your body, I used it for my legs and hips, there is also an option to use it on your arms. I used it for only 15 minutes each and saw results, and if you have more pain you can use it for 30 minutes. After an intense Pilates class, this was the best way to heal my sore muscles.
The subtle squeezing redirected all the blood in the right direction back to my muscles. After my session, I felt all stretched out and little to no muscle pain or strain. We tend to hold a lot of emotional pain in our hip area, which for me can cause tightness or cracking in my hip bone, this totally released the tension held there.
If you're in need of pain management in a short amount of time, use compression therapy.
LED Light Therapy
LED Light Therapy was first developed by NASA to heal wounds in space with speed, because in zero-gravity situations wounds don’t quite heal as fast as they would otherwise. Light has the ability to be absorbed in skin and create a healing response, and NASA scientists discovered this after they saw a plant growing under an LED light. Since then this technology has been used in the medical field and now in the wellness space.
Different wavelengths of light produce different responses, red light can heal surface level inflammation and increases collagen, blue light can penetrate deeper and clear bacteria in sebaceous glands which causes acne, and infrared white is most powerful and can penetrate on the deepest level for recovery. There are no UV rays.
All of this comes without any side effects and is non-invasive. I used the Celluma machine which had three settings: support for aging, acne, and pain/wound healing. I went with the acne option because I had a zit from my cycle that I wanted removed.
I used it for half an hour as I laid on a table with a blanket over me, and came out of it in an upbeat mood (the light boosts mood just like sunlight would) and my skin was smooth, I could really tell how my pores were minimized. The pimple I came in with was even completely gone at the end, which I wasn't expecting to see a difference in one session. See my after photo below, of me when I came home.
Light therapy has been shown to enhance cellular metabolism, accelerate the repair and replenishment of damaged skin cells, as well as stimulate the production of collagen.
When used regularly on a weekly basis the results truly build up, and Frost and Float offers amazing packages that bundle these sessions together. Skin cells constantly regenerate so going on a regular basis for touch ups will help to maintain results. I'm definitely interested in using this more regularly for acne and to get a head start on preventative anti-aging!
If you suffer from acne, or have facial injuries or aging lines you'd like to reduce in an non-invasive way, try out LED Therapy.
I haven't tried cryotherapy yet, but Frost and Float gave me a sneak peek into what it looks like. I'm very sensitive to cold (I'm always cold as it is) and even though a session is only 2-3 minutes that seems long to me now! I know I will try it one day for the incredible benefits, so far I've been drawn to the more relaxing wellness experiences. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to help heal on both mind body levels, such as sports recovery, beauty, and anxiety and depression.
I'm in deep gratitude for Frost and Float Spa for offering these wellness tools all in one beautiful space, with such a caring and attentive staff, and package offerings that allow you to try out these services together. This spot helps me uplevel my self care in a natural way.
Thank you Frost and Float Spa for sponsoring this post and thank you for supporting the brands that make this blog possible. As always, opinions are my own.
