Basil is an unlikely powerhouse of an essential oil for support, from anxious feelings and the physical manifestations that result from them. For a few months after receiving my incredible Every Oil Kit from doTERRA, I really didn't know what to use Basil for, other than flavoring my cooking in pastas, pizza, and sauces!
In Italian culture, basil was used as a sign of love. Placing a pot of basil on a balcony meant that a woman was ready for her suitor to come. If the man arrived with a sprig of basil, then the woman would fall in love with him. Wearing basil on his person signified that a man had serious intentions for a woman he was courting.
One of the most universally applicable oils, basil is from the Greek word meaning "king," and ancient Greeks believed it opened the gateways to heaven.
I learned of the tremendous benefits of Basil essential oil and realized it was something I really needed, and that many of us could use. Emotionally and physically it supports renewal, from a variety of symptoms such as mental fatigue, adrenal fatigue, loss of sense of smell and symptoms of work addiction.
Our Western culture puts a lot of focus on working and this leads many to burn out (including myself in 2017) and anxious feelings as a result of adrenal fatigue. Basil diffused at work would help to bring more balance between personal life and work endeavors, very much needed in the U.S.! The symptoms of adrenal exhaustion are the primary areas that are improved by Basil, such as fatigue, low energy, being overwhelmed and the inability to cope with life's stressors.
I started to use Basil as a daily support for adrenal exhaustion and saw great results. I used it daily in the morning on the bottoms of feet and adrenal glands (lower back) and saw much improvement in my energy and overall attitude, it helped to clear any nervousness and anxiousness. Now I have healed so much that I only use it as needed if there are any flareups.
Basil relieves headaches and migraines, as it's used to clear the mind and relieve intellectual fatigue, while giving clarity and mental strength.
What makes this oil universally applicable is that it supports all of our body systems! Physical, mental, spiritual and emotional states. From PMS & menstrual issues, to earache, to migraines, muscle spasms, to nausea, to bug bites, it supports in healing. It supports the respiratory tract and is often used for asthma, bronchitis and sinus infections. Another system it supports is digestion, with cases of constipation, nausea, vomiting and cramp, it's also good when used for menstrual problems.
Basil is mostly known for how it helps with focus and those in deep mental strain, as it provides optimism and helps for recovery from negative habits.
The recovery from negative habits is especially true for the symptoms of work addiction. Basil may also assist in giving up false stimulants or help with substance abuse. This use of Basil intrigues me the most, as it shows there are natural tools in plant medicine that can help us from addictions. It helps restore natural rhythms and balance in the body, such as proper sleep, activity, rest, by increasing natural energy. In a word, we could call this the oil of renewal!
