Top 8 Essential Oils to Travel: Long Haul Flight Edition

Updated: Aug 2, 2018

This April I traveled to South East Asia for the first time, and I wanted to make sure I had all the natural wellness support I could easily travel with. I did my own research prior scouring blogs and pulled together the solutions below that truly made my trip amazing! I pulled the top oils based on their qualities in what I was looking for in travel (rest inducing, jet lag relief, immunity protection, and protection from the environment) and made my own versions. Traveling to Bali, Singapore, and Vietnam, I was so grateful to have these oils and doTERRA products to use.

After landing from a 19 hour journey from Boston to Singapore, I'll never forget how my friend Cathy told me how amazing I looked she couldn't see the effects of traveling that far. It was incredible to be able to sleep soundly and wake up feeling refreshed on every leg of my journey. I added some items at the end I wish I had brought so you can be prepared on your next long haul flights and travels.

Go to Sleep Rollerball:

  • Clary Sage

  • Sandlewood

  • Roman Chamomile

  • Cedarwood

  • Fractionated coconut oil in a 10 ml amber glass roller ball (You can find the rollerball on Amazon)

I researched which were the most sleep inducing and calming blends, then put them all together in a convenient travel friendly rollerball bottle I purchased on Amazon here. Rubbing this on my wrists, temple, and neck anytime I wanted to fall asleep, say on my flight or at my hotel/Airbnb, I would fall asleep easily in minutes. I'm not even exaggerating! See for yourself

Refreshing, hydrating Jet Lag mist:

  • Basil

  • Grapefruit

  • Helichrysum

  • Moroccan rose water

  • 1 oz amber glass spray travel bottle (You can find the spray bottle and rose water on Amazon here)

Basil promotes focus and alertness, while it has a cooling effect on your skin. Grapefruit promotes an uplifting effect due to its invigorating and energizing aroma, while acting as a purifying agent when added to a skin. Then I added Helichrysum for its restorative properties to skin, reducing the appearance of blemishes and promoting glowing complexion. These oils have positive physical and mental attributes, so that's why I chose them to mix with toning and hydrating rose water. Using this in the mornings and after landing from long haul flights, I looked dewy and well rested. Now when I use it, the sweet smell reminds me of my amazing travels to Bali where I used it the most.

Sample size On Guard toothpaste

This toothpaste is incredible, once you try it you won't want to use the typical supermarket edition again. It is non foaming (recommended by dentists as the best type of toothpaste to have) and will leave your teeth feeling so clean, no fuzziness you usually get from other kinds. It's also whitening using natural ingredients so it's non toxic and great for sensitivities. The On Guard immunity blend is used in this, and we know your mouth has the most germs and bacteria so it keeps you protected and healthy. One small tube provides almost 2 days of use!

doTERRA beadlets: Peppermint and On Guard

These beadlets contain the essential oil, and come in travel pocket size perfect for purse or back pocket. The peppermint is used for nausea and any digestive issues, I was so happy to have this in my purse whenever on a bumpy flight or car ride I was popping these. I took the On Guard beadlets everyday to support my immune system since travel can introduce new stressors and bacteria you normally don't come across. It kept me healthy even when I traveled to 4 different countries in a matter of 10 days!

Homemade bug repellent:

10 drops of doTERRA TerraShield Repellent blend

3 drops of Lemongrass

Fractionated coconut oil in a 1 oz amber glass spray travel bottle

The TerraShield blend is specific to doTERRA and is made for repelling insects. In the tropical locations of Bali, Singapore, and Vietnam, I knew there were some trace cases of malaria and other bug related disease so I wanted to be sure I was prepared. I loved using my own mini travel bottle of bug repellent, so easy to bring along and it smelled amazing. It was also moisturizing with the coconut oil, our driver in Bali even commented that he could smell the lemongrass and people used it there for bug repelling purposes too. No bug bites at all over the course of my trip! If you don't want to DIY, doTERRA sells a pocket travel spray of Terrashield already made for you.

Sun burn relief: Lavender

I unexpectedly got sun burned, even when I applied sunscreen on a consistent basis. Granted I did spend all day in direct sunlight on the beach south of the equator, so it happened. I was really happy to have lavender samples on hand, and I mixed them with the travel size lotion I got in my hotel to calm my burn and peeling. It saved my life and a lot of pain.

What I wish I brought:

On Guard Cough Drops

Airplanes are so dry and drinking a lot of water every second leads to so many bathroom trips, especially when you're the window seat on a flight from Dubai to Boston it can get to be a lot. I wish I had the On Guard, immunity blend cough drops with me to suck on when my throat was feeling dry, that was the one issue I didn't come prepared to deal with!

Wild Orange

While I did bring a small sample size of Wild Orange, I was finished with it pretty quickly! This oil is my go-to when I need a pick me up, and some nights when I would go out after the day of traveling I would put a couple drops in my water instead of having a tea or coffee, it has the same effect of a pick me up. In the morning too I would add a few drops to my palm and rub then cup over my nose, to clear up any morning fogginess and be alert!

Bed bug preventative spray:

10-15 drops of Peppermint

4 drops of lemongrass in water in a 1 oz amber glass

We don't want to think about bed bugs being an issue, however I noticed some of the conditions in South East Asia called for it and I sprayed all my suitcases and bags when I got back just to be sure. The bugs hate peppermint and the lemongrass kills any of the existing bugs that might already be there. It's a very good idea to spray your luggage before, during, and after your trip with this easy to make blend in order to prevent any bugs from sticking to your stuff on the trip.
