Spikenard essential oil is the oil of gratitude, and happens to be one of the most chemically diverse essential oils in the world. Ancient Romans used Spikenard in perfume, it's been used in religious ceremonies and it's even mentioned in the Bible several times.

Spikenard is revered in ancient Ayurvedic healthcare, supporting healing from sleeping troubles, depression, stress, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome and nervous problems.

Ever since the two deadly earthquakes struck Nepal in 2015, it's been doTERRA's ongoing mission to help rebuild the remote villages that were affected. Spikenard essential oil (along with Wintergreen oil in 2015) were introduced as part of this effort, both being sustainably sourced from the Himalayan Mountains, and in turn providing more exports for the country.

From the highest regions of the Nepalese Himalayas, there is a whole complicated process of attaining this plant. It can take days to get to the mountains to pick Spikenard, as it only grows in higher altitudes of 9,850 feet to 16,400 feet. Due to the weather conditions, the harvest is restricted to only a few months a year.

Its' musty earthy deep smell is used in aromatherapy, and though it may be off-putting at first, but once you start working with it consistently, you'll notice it becomes warm and grounding.

Spikenard has one of the most complicated chemical makeup and history in essential oils. In fact, second to Frankincense or as a substitute, this is an oil to have on hand that can cover a wide variety of needs!

That's because this unsung hero contains around 170 compounds - almost every class of essential oil component is represented. It includes alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, oxides, esters, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes.

On an emotional level, Spikenard is the oil of gratitude. It helps address patterns of victim-hood and expecting bad luck and instead shows us how to appreciate life as it is. Spikenard essential oil shows us how to surrender, and how to find the deeper meaning in our lives. In this way it shows us how to be grateful for our challenges, in order to transcend them and find peace.

Gratitude is always a precursor to abundance, and this oil will help release blame and anger: two major blocks to abundance. And just overall well-being in general!

Use a few drops of Spikenard in the ways listed below, and diffuse when you need support calming your emotions, overcoming insomnia, and remembering to be grateful.
