Spearmint Essential Oil

A common flavor in toothpaste, gum and candy, the ancient Greeks even enjoyed bathing with spearmint. In the Middle Ages, Spearmint was often scattered on the ground to get rid of rodents and encourage good health.

It takes about 3.5 pounds of plant matter to make a 15 ml bottle, and doTERRA sources its Spearmint essential oil from India, where it grows in abundance and is used in the popular dish, chutney.

Spearmint is one of hundreds of varieties of mint. Spearmint essential oil is chemically distinct and contains only a hint of the menthol that dominates Peppermint’s flavor, which makes it a gentle option for kids. Personally I love it as an alternative to Peppermint if you've got sensitive skin like me, and still want to get the benefits. Spearmint is a milder and sweeter mint.

Another difference between Spearmint and Peppermint? One of Spearmint's primary chemical constituents is carvone, which may support nervous system health, and another is limonene, which is responsible for the uplifting benefits of citrus oils. Neither of these are present in significant amounts in Peppermint.

Spearmint is also a popular flavoring, used in salad dressings, drinks, and desserts. I love to add a few drops to a plant-based brownie mix, and in lemonade to add a minty flavor. It has a delicate flavor compared to Peppermint!

As of December 2017, there are over 111 published studies on Spearmint according to PubMed. Most notably, its cleansing properties and fresh aroma are popular in dental hygiene. Spearmint essential oil also supports a healthy digestion, a few drops in water or in a veggie cap will do the trick*

Spiritually, Spearmint is the oil of confident speech. It inspires clarity in thought, and this leads to confident verbal articulation. It shows us how to access our inner light, which includes our opinions and inner convictions, then communicate that with the world.

If you had an experience growing up where it wasn't safe to share your opinion, then you'll have anxious feelings around this and Spearmint can help you articulate your opinions. It's also a great support for confidence before public speaking or presentations at work.

Using a few drops on your neck and back of neck, in addition to sniffing straight from the bottle, will allow you to gain clarity and confidence to communicate your opinion before a conversation with someone.

Spearmint essential oil increases mental focus, so diffusing it while studying will support you to focus and uplift your mood. This sweet, fresh and airy oil is a versatile oil that can support you in many ways, on physical and emotional levels.
