When I was planning my trip to Paris, I did what I always do when planning trips: look at plant-based and vegan dining options ahead of time so that I could be prepared. What I was not prepared for, was the abundance of options I found. I learned that the plant-based movement has truly taken off in the French capital!
My family is from France, so I've spent almost every summer there growing up and I always ate the traditional meat and dairy options that made up most of the delicacies. Just a few years ago when I transitioned to a plant-based diet, my whole family was completely new to the concept.
So now, just two years later since I lasted visited, it blew my mind that there were so many vegan options in Paris, based on all types of cuisine - even French. There is even an annual festival called Vegan Smmmile Pop now every September, with artists, music, culinary demos, activists and more. I'd love to go one year.
Now, my family there is more familiar with veganism because of its popularity, and people in my family that are health conscious have even mentioned to me that they've stopped eating meat as much.
Prior to leaving, I mapped out a list of restaurants and gave myself plenty of options to choose from when I got there. When I first arrived in Paris on the TGV train from my grandmothers home, I made my way on the metro to my Airbnb. By the time the host had shown me around the house, it was time for dinner and I was starving!
So I set off to the closest plant-based option in my neighborhood which was La Palanche D'âulac, about a 15 minute walk from my Airbnb in Montmartre. It was Vietnamese, quick, and affordable: filling noodle soup with spring rolls on top. It was perfect to get my hunger satisfied immediately! No frills, there weren't that many options on the menu, but delicious none the less.
Before I arrived, I had made a dinner reservation for the evening I was arriving for Le Potager du Marais, which is a French cuisine plant-based restaurant with sarrasin (savory) crepes, my absolute favorite French dish (I'm much more a salt-tooth than sweet). The only time they had open was for the second dinner seating at 8:30 (the French eat so late) and I just couldn't last that long. It's still on my list!
The next day I decided to check out the fashionable Le Marais neighborhood, and to start my day off I wanted something cold to boost my energy before all this sight seeing. So I stopped off Wild & the Moon juice bar, in their Gravelliers location.
It was a small location compared to their other locations, it had only a bench to sit on outside. Wild & the Moon had wonderful wellness elixirs on the menu (not French cuisine so much as they were healthy) and I decided to get the Iced Chocolate Chaga, which had raw cacao, chaga mushroom which is an adaptogen, vanilla, maple syrup, coconut milk, and homemade almond & coconut milks. So delicious! Extra points for a compostable straw.
With my delicious drink, I stumbled on the beautiful park Place des Vosges. I sat there for awhile in the shade, just taking in the surroundings and people. I recommend this as a great place to take a rest in tourist activities.
It was time for lunch before I planned to go see Sainte-Chappelle, the cathedral filled with floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows, and I had read amazing things about Hank Pizza so that's where I went since it was close by. There's also a sister location called Hank Burger, an all plant-based burger joint.
On my back to my Airbnb, I stopped by the Carrefour supermarket on my street, and picked up some plant-based groceries to cook a few dinners at my Airbnb. On top of the fresh produce, there was a whole bio (organic) section with plant-based patties, grains, and even tofu filled raviolis. It was perfect!
The next day before heading to Monet's House and Gardens in Giverny, I had breakfast at Cloud Cakes Coffee Shop which was one of the vegan foodie spots I was probably the most excited about. That's because they offer all plant-based French pastries. So I decided to get one of my favorite French pastries, almond croissant, with an iced matcha latte. It was all sweet and delicious, and the croissant was surprisingly filling!
The cafe was small with plenty of seating inside and some tables outside, wifi was available too. It was well-decorated and cozy, the staff were all so friendly (not the norm in Paris).
When I got back from the absolutely stunning home and gardens of Monet, I was starving because the last meal I had was that morning, and I just had a protein bar with me on the train. It was an incredibly hot and sunny day, so I was spent and very hungry when I arrived back in Paris.
I headed to Vegebowl for dinner, and it turned out to be my favorite plant-based restaurant in Paris. There were so many options to choose from, it actually took me a while to choose. It was early for dinner when I arrived and the place started to fill up quickly after. It's cuisine is Asian fusion with Japanese and Chinese dishes. There were also a few non-plant based options from what I remember.
There was a sushi menu and plenty of lunch and dinner combo deals. I loved the steamed dumplings with ground soy 'meat' and the noodles and tofu dish, the people next to me where eating so many delicious looking meals like fried rice and appetizers. Would love to try that next time!
I left feeling so inspired about the future of the plant-based lifestyle, and it being integrated into cultures around the world. In fact it has a lot to do with my upcoming offering for you, so stay tuned.
