Petitgrain Essential Oil

Petitgrain (pronounced petite-grain) essential oil is a French word that translates to “little grains.” It was given this name because the fruit of the bitter orange tree is quite small for a citrus fruit—about the size of a cherry.

The essential oil is distilled from the leaves and twigs of this tree, and doTERRA sources it from Paraguay in a unique situation where the producers grow, harvest, and distill the plants on their own land for the essential oil.

According to doTERRA.com, by supporting rural development projects and small-scale farmers, doTERRA provides an economically viable alternative to clear-cutting land. This helps protect the remaining patches of the Atlantic Rainforest in eastern Paraguay from deforestation. Watch the sourcing video below to learn more!

Petitgrain smells herbaceous, citrus and floral all at the same time, making it a beautiful unique aroma. Petitgrain helps enhance other fragrances, making it a common ingredient in the perfume and cologne industry, you definitely get that high end fragrance aroma, except from the pure plant.

Due to its high Linalool content (which is also found in Lavender) it's a calming oil, and I use it most nights in my diffuser to help me fall asleep. I've had colleagues use it on their big toe or base of spine before going to bed and it's helped them into a deep sleep.

Its calming properties affect the nervous system, digestive system, and cardiovascular system. Interestingly enough, it lessens sweating from nervousness as well as body odor, when applied topically or taken internally. * It's great for easing anxious feelings and stress.

As with any essential oil, there is an emotional healing component. Emotionally, Petitgrain is the oil of ancestry. Which is so fitting when you watch how the farmers in the sourcing video are father and son working together. This oil cultivates a deep appreciation for positive forms of ancestral knowledge, wisdom and family history.

We all carry a portion of our ancestors lives and history: physically, emotionally and through inherited traditions. This oil is especially helpful as an head in healing a complicated family history. It allows us to see the humanness of our family and ancestors, and encourages mindfulness on how to heal wounds, patterns and tendencies of unconsciously repeating family mistakes.

In the same way, Petitgrain allows us to develop our own path outside of our family without seeing that as a departure from the family or betrayal. This is actually healthy. It also allows us to see the gift in our ancestry and heal any unfinished or unresolved issues. For more on generational healing with essential oils, click on my post here.

Blend Petitgrain with other citrus oils you have to support your whole self: mind, body and spirit.
