Energy Profiling: Type 4 Primary and Type 2 Secondary Energy

As a seeker I love diving into personal development work, psychology, and getting to know myself better. I enjoy personality tests (#personalitytestjunkie) because they give guidance on how to handle emotions and behaviors, and give you a better understanding of why you do the things you do.

You then feel more compassion and understanding towards yourself, which ripples out to those in your life as well.

Personality tests can be helpful to better understand yourself. This knowledge is so empowering!

With most tests though (until I was introduced to Energy Profiling) I found the results be to non-comprehensive or useful in my actual life. I'm sure you have taken these tests for work or in school - I have felt that sometimes the results depended on what mood I was in when I took the test, like the Myers Briggs assessment and the Gallup Strengths Finder.

I would identify with the results to some extent, however they wouldn't help me figure out where I'm going in life or how to accept the way that I am: in other words how to use the gifts. A lot of the time I would learn the negative aspects and not know what to do with them other than judge them.

I took the Myers Briggs a few times when I worked in corporate marketing, and each time I got a different profile, starting with ENFP and then moving towards ENFJ. I definitely feel like an introvert, I'm social on my own terms, and the Energy Profiling Assessment I'll go over describes me this way.

With the Gallup Strengths Finder, my test results showed me my top 5 strengths were Intellection, Futuristic, Ideation, Restorative, and Input.

While these results gave me insights, they didn't tell me what to do with them. Or how they related to my physical, spiritual, and emotional bodies. The test sort of just stopped there.

Why Energy Profiling is Different

Recently I learned about Energy Profiling with my leadership team at doTERRA, to help us better understand ourselves and our leaders, so we can work to play up these strengths and personality traits in our business, instead of working against them.

I had to write this blog to share with you because it has been life-changing! I have finally learned to see my so-called 'flaws' as gifts. It has truly been enlightening and so useful for understanding myself and my way of being.

The real benefit is that you will learn to embrace and appreciate even those personality traits that you have been previously judged for as faults, weaknesses, conflicts or annoyances and learn to view them as a natural part of you and of others. Most important you'll be grateful for their gifts.

This energy profiling measures your energetic makeup both in every day life, as well as when you're under stress. It's unique in that it relates these types to the actual elements and movements in nature.

What I like about this assessment is that it focuses on your core energy type, which is something that stays inherent to you, meaning it doesn't change so easily with what mood you're in. It's rare that tests go into this level of detail, on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels!

Type 1: Nitrogen, Upward, Light with a gift for Ideas, essence of Lightness

Type 2: Oxygen, Fluid, Flowing with a gift for Details, essence of Connectedness

Type 3: Hydrogen, Active, Reactive with a gift for Action, essence of Sureness

Type 4: Carbon, Constant, Still with a gift for Perfecting, essence of Exactness

It takes into account your behavior tendencies (Relationships, Social, Timeliness

Work, Money, Physical Activity), body language (Walking, Sitting/Standing, Voice/Language, Doodling, Personal Space, Interior Design), physical features (Skin and Skin Texture, Face Shape, Cheeks, Nose, Eyebrows, Eyes, Hands), interactions and expressions. In other words it paints a pictures of wholeness in our humanity.

What other personality test do you know that goes into this level of detail with its results?! Or shows you how to create a successful relationship with each Type, each Type's natural gifts and talents, how they process information, their leadership tendencies, what common expressions each Type often hears from others that conflicts with their natural movements, or common challenges that can occur when you express your leading Type too dominantly.

Each of us leads with a primary and secondary energy type. I like that this test takes that into account, unlike the Myers Briggs, because it wasn't until recently where I truly pinpointed which energies of mine are dominant. I feel like an Introvert when I get labeled a lot as an Extrovert, and this type of profiling takes this into account.

All 4 of the energy types are in us, it's a matter of which one fits most into our being that we lead from. This type of profiling is so helpful and shows how all types are needed when working in unity with others.

It took me a couple of months to actually land on what energy type I was, as I dug deep and uncovered my true nature. What's interesting is when your true energy type is out of balance, say during a period of transition, you might actually think you're a different energy type than your true dominant type.

So I thought back to when I was young. When I was little I always wanted to do things on my own, I would say 'moi tout seule' - in French it means 'me all on my own.' Going up the stairs if someone helped me by holding my hand, I would walk back down the stairs and start over to do it on my own! This has Type 4 written all over it.

I initially thought I was a Type 2 dominant, where you are soft, flowing more of a listener, like to be cozy and at ease, when this was actually my secondary energy type, and the reason I was feeling it so strongly was more from conditioning in society and upbringing by parents: who I was told I should be, not who I actually am. This was a need for acceptance to live my life in away that was congruent to my parents and societys way of telling me to behave, and I learned what behavior was accepted (obedience, being quiet) and what wasn't (speaking my mind, making decisions that didn't please the status quo)

Knowing Yourself is Freeing

Everyone should have the benefit of feeling validated in who they truly are and also have the insight of learning the strengths and weaknesses inherent in their nature. You can learn what the four energy types are and see what type of energy you are here. Click start my "Before & After" (you don't have to actually complete this part by uploading photos if you don't want, just start with the energy type video overview).

Watch the video covering all the energy types, and the examples of each to choose which one you think you might be. Once you make a free account, you can log in anytime to watch the videos. Carol Tuttle, personal development expert and energy healer who created the Live Your Truth program, then teaches people how to dress based on their energy type.

At first I thought physical appearance wasn't that important (perhaps it seemed too superficial) but I learned through this work that your outer appearance can influence your own confidence and energy, as well as how others perceive and respond to you.

Energetically, everything is a vibration and so our dressing is either in our harmony with our being or it's out of balance. You will better understand how your energy fluctuates, and recognize what feeds or takes away your energy.

At this time I believe I'm a Type 4 primary and Type 2 secondary energy. I originally thought the two were switched. Then I watched some of the videos Carol has on the website that explain how to choose your energy type, questions you might run into, and different combination examples of real people with their primary and secondary types of energy. There are plenty of resources!

In fact so many people have misconceptions about what there true energy is, you can really go down the rabbit hole with all the videos on this and how to choose which one you are.

These videos were incredibly helpful! Here is a link to the Type 4 primary and Type 2

secondary energies:

Are You a Soft Introvert or Bold Introvert? (Type 2 and Type 4 energies)

How to Choose Your Energy Type

As someone who doesn't like to be put into a box, I originally resisted this type of assessment. Until I realized that this resistance showed me I was most aligned with Type 4, who is the Individualist that doesn't like to be put in a box and wants to be original and unique. Then I realized I could so recognize myself in this type.

Essential Oil for Type 4: Patchouli, Sandalwood, and doTERRA Balance (Grounding) Blend. Particularly the Balance blend puts a pause on the mental energy plane, the running thoughts that can overtake Type 4's emotional and physical energy planes. An earthy, grounding smell made up of Spruce, Ho Wood Leaf, Frankincense Resin, Blue Tansy Flower, Blue Chamomile Flower, and Osmanthus Flower essential oils in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil.

Like the smells in nature it's made of, it creates a sense of calm while bringing harmony to the mind and body, and balance to the emotions - perfect for Type 4 who can lean towards being in their head and feelings.

Body Language: Poised, back straight, direct stance. This is where my Type 2 comes in below, I actually prefer to get as comfortable as possible in what ever sitting position I'm in.

Voice: Clean, thorough, well-pronounced quality. My voice certainly has this quality.

Perceived/Judged As: Perfectionist, know it all, critical, judgmental. Perfecting ability is actually the strength!

Essential Oil for Type 2: doTERRA Copaiba, Lavender, and also Balance! Calming effects are perfect for Type 2 as they infuse your energy to shift it. States of worry and anxiety signal that you are out of your energy and are taking on the energy of the outside environment. The world is mostly run in a yang energy, there is a cultural push to 'go and do' so it is easy to feel out of alignment as this type. Essential oils help to shift and manage your energy states.

Voice: Subtle, quiet, told that they are mumbling (I definitely was told I was mumbling all the time growing up!)

Perceived/Judged as: Too slow, worrywort, asks too many questions. Asked to speak up and hurry up. The slow sensitive nature is actually the gift!
