Deodorant Dangers

In the last year I've made the slow but steady switch to non-toxic products for myself and for my home. It really is a whole new lifestyle that is safe and healthy, and doTERRA has made it so easy with a wide variety of consumables for self and the home. One of the first switches I made was to a non-toxic deodorant. In fact, millennials are the number one group of people that are concerned with using non-toxic body products!

This group of the population seems to be most concerned with how products affect us, animals, and our environment. So why is it that we've been exposed to toxic products on the shelves of our grocery stores without any consequences? Simply because our government in the U.S. doesn't require this level of testing and disclosement. The same can't be said for other countries in the world, such as France, which have laws that require companies to disclose toxicities and their effects on the environment and body.

This requires us to be conscious consumers, which we should all be anyways! Especially with products we put in the air we breathe and on our bodies, we have to be sure that there are no adverse affects from what we use.

Thankfully there is a way to check which products are safe to use, all made possible by the Environmental Working Groups cosmetics database called Skin Deep. You can find any cosmetic product on here including deodorant and makeup, lotions, etc. Each product is rated on a scale from 1-10, with 1 being the least toxic and 10 being the most.

Up until recently there haven't be too many deodorant solutions out there that are natural and effective. We shouldn't have to give one up for the other! I did some experimenting with brands like Tom's and Schmidts, and found that Tom's did not work at all, and I found that Schmidts did work great.

Schmidts has essential oils in them, unless you get the unscented version which I have in a travel size. Except now since I know how important the quality and toxicity levels of essential oils are after using doTERRA, I needed an option that had certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils in it.

doTERRA had a natural deodorant option that I tried, which has since been discontinued. I'm glad that it was! Not only did it not work but it didn't even really smell good. Then last month at doTERRA's convention they revealed a new formula of the deodorant as it was the most requested product improvement. They listened to the people and created an effective and beautiful smelling deodorant formulated from arrowroot powder, shea butter, jojoba oil, coconut oil, baking powder and the Balance blend which contains osmanthus, blue tansy, ho leaf, frankincense, blue chamomile, and spruce - it's divine.

Antiperspirant vs deodorant

Deodorant simply means it's taking care of the smell, while antiperspirant takes care of the sweat itself. You actually want to sweat because it releases toxins! Granted you don't want to feel uncomfortably wet and thankfully there are natural ingredients that make it possible to sweat less. There will be an adjustment period when you make the switch to all-natural deodorant, with more sweating then usual as your detoxify and unclog. So if you can make it through that then you'll be golden!

What ingredients make your standard deodorant toxic?

Your typical deodorants like Dove, Secret, and Axe use the below ingredients that cause adverse effects on our body.

Talc:

If Talc contains asbestiform fibers, then it is considered a carcinogen. The quantity of asbestiform fibers in deodorants is unclear as it is not regulated in cosmetic products.

Dangers for health: linked to cancer.

Parabens:

They are said to disturb the body’s hormonal balance and to mimic estrogen, and estrogen is said to play a part in breast cancer formation.

Dangers for health: linked to breast cancer.

Triclosan:

Triclosan can irritate your skin and cause contact dermatitis. Your body contains good as well as bad bacteria, but triclosan kills both. The FDA classifies triclosan as a pesticide.

Dangers for health: cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity

Phthalates:

Phthalates are chemical compounds that are commonly added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity. They are dangerous and are in so many things. Phthalates are used in a wide range of cosmetic and food products — plus, they’re released into the environment.

Dangers for health:

Asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, breast cancer, obesity and type II diabetes, low IQ, neurodevelopmental issues, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development and male fertility issues.

Silica:

A known skin irritant, it may also be contaminated with crystalline quartz which is a carcinogen (capable of causing cancer).

Dangers for health: cancer, allergies/immunotoxicity

Aluminum Compounds:

Aluminum compounds within deodorants act as a plug within the sweat ducts and temporarily stop the flow of sweat. However, these compounds can be absorbed by your skin. Just like parabens they can mimic estrogen which promotes growth of breast cancer cells.

Dangers for health: linked to breast cancer.

Fragrance (artificial):

So much research is coming out how fragrance is a huge irritant to our systems, and the environment. I learned this year how they increase allergies and I've made the switch to non-scented products or those fragranced with certified pure therapeutic grade essential oils.

Dangers for health: skin irritation, harmful to the environment, allergies and organ system toxicity.

What deodorant should you use then?

One that is:

  • Aluminum, paraben, phthalate, and talc free. Plus free from the additional above chemicals!

  • Fragrance free or scented with 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils

  • Made with arrowroot powder which aids in absorbing underarm moisture leaving you feeling fresh and dry throughout the day

  • Made with baking soda to help neutralize and prevent odors. Some find baking soda irritating so if you do then look for one without it!

After trying a few different brands to get a feel for the right one for me, I really love the doTERRA Balance Deodorant. It works and smells amazing. If you'd like to learn more about it send me a message at emily@guidetowholenesshealing.com!
