Clove gets its name from the Latin word clavus, meaning “nail.” This is a fitting name, as the buds of clove resemble small tacks or nails!
Clove has been used since the third century BC, as a powerful oral cleanser when a Chinese leader in the Han Dynasty required those who addressed him to chew cloves to freshen their breath. I like to use a couple drops on my gums if they are feeling sensitive or raw, especially after airplane travels where our mouths are exposed to dry air and germs.
Today, it's still used as a gastrointestinal support, cardiovascular support, immune support, powerful antioxidant, cooking spice, and emotional support!
It's one of the main ingredients in doTERRA's popular On Guard Protective blend for it's immune boosting properties. As a natural insect repellent, Clove essential oil targets bacteria and other invaders, such as parasites, to clear them out of the body effectively. When I treat and manage candida on a quarterly basis, I use 3 drops of Clove in a veggie cap blended with 3 drops of Cassia for internal cleansing. This recipe from The Essential Life is known as the Candida Bomb.
Its' main chemical constituent, eugenol, has energizing properties making this oil a mood booster, mind balancer, and energy booster!
Since all our body systems are connected, our digestive system is affected when we show any signs of stress. There are recent findings in a peer-reviewed scientific journal showing that Clove essential oil supports a healthy digestion even during times of stress. According to this article, "the authors theorize that eugenol (in Clove) acts on stress-responsive regions of the brain, promoting balanced levels of stress-response hormones that are released throughout the body, which helps keep the gastrointestinal tract functioning properly."
In essence, Clove is a wonderful holistic support for complete balance in body, mind, emotion, and spirit. Energetically, it's the oil of boundaries, and it supports individuals in standing up for themselves in order to put those boundaries in place.
Many times, codependency and poor boundaries can be related to childhood pain, trauma, or abuse. How Clove supports is by helping to break free from these patterns by creating a clear sense of self.
During times of heightened emotional response, such as mercury retrograde or barometric pressure increases, Clove is the oil to have on hand in order to manage emotions without letting outside forces impact them.
In this way, it's a perfect oil to help in overcoming victim mentality. This mentality keeps one from making positive change because it assumes that one is powerless to change one's life circumstances and is overly influenced by other people.
Clove essential oil helps one become proactive in their life, and instills integrity, empowerment, independence, courageousness, protection, and clear boundaries. It's easy to receive these benefits simply by inhaling, taking internally or applying Clove topically.
It's important to note, Clove is a 'hot' oil and should always be diluted with a carrier oil when applied topically on skin. Because of its' warming sensation to the skin, it's sometimes used for massage therapy. I love to combine a few drops in my body lotion or fractionated coconut oil to warm up on chilly days.
Of course, we can also receive the amazing benefits of Clove by using it as a potent replacement for spices in our recipes that call for Clove buds or powder. Check out some of doTERRA's Clove baking recipes below!
