This is the first post in a new series I'm writing on single essential oil spotlights, which will help give an overall understanding of where the oil comes from, what it's chemical make up is, how to use it and what it's healing properties are on all levels: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual.

We'll learn about the true nature and spirit of the plant. We treat ourselves holistically and essential oils can aid us in doing that, that's what makes them so versatile. One oil can be used in a myriad of different ways. I'm excited to share with you all the knowledge I've built in the last 8 months of using these doTERRA essential oils extensively, with myself and my clients.

So here we go!

Arborvitae means the "Tree of Life," and it can live for over 800 years! The oldest arborvitae tree discovered was around 1,653 years old when it died. doTERRA's Arborvitae is sourced from the wood of the Thuja plicata tree (as shown in the photo at the beginning of this post). The oil of divine grace, it comes from the Western Red Cedar and is native to North America (primarily Canada and the Northwestern United States). Native to Canada, all parts of the Arborvitae (tree, bark and roots) were used extensively by Native Americans for health benefits and for building vessels, totem poles, baskets, and clothing. It plays a special role in their lives and is held with great reverence, as you'll see later on in the sourcing video.

doTERRA is the only company in the aromatherapy industry that offers arborvitae, and as a result they source it from the only distillery in the world that is producing essential oil from the giant arborvitae tree! Their sourcing agreement is part of a highly managed and sustainable existing timber industry network that sources from the temperate rain forest of the North West.

Because of the sustainable forestry program in place for harvesting in British Columbia, not one additional tree is being cut down to produce the essential oil. Learn more here: Cō-Impact Sourcing® Arborvitae. The saw dust isn't thrown away and burned, oils are extracted from this too. Pure water is used to steam distill it, then the left-over saw dust is loaded and brought to paper mills to be used.

Arborvitae's smell can be describe as woody, majestic, and strong. It has a high ester content, which you don't typically see in other wood oils. Esters are simply chemical constituents that have restorative properties. Learn more about the chemical constituents in doTERRA's chemistry wheel.

This wood-based oil is rich, while being stimulating and grounding at the same time. Because of its natural preserving properties, Arborvitae prevents wood from rotting, which makes it popular in woodcraft and for preserving natural wood surfaces. The essential oil works the same way for humans, protecting from insects as a repellent and bacteria, parasites, and fungi.

Chemical Constituents

Arborvitae's main chemical constituents are Methyl thujate, Hinokitiol, and Thujic acid. Hinokitiol are a group of chemical compounds that protect against environmental and seasonal threats and have powerful purifying properties. Thujic acid, another tropolone found in Arborvitae, has been studied for its ability to protect against common threats in the environment.

How it smells

Woody, Unique, Earthy, Outdoorsy

Physical Support

  • Apply on stomach when experiencing digestive issues, this is my go-to! Diffuse to kill airborne pathogens as bacterial support. Apply to bottoms of feet if experiencing candida, fungal issues, and viruses. Apply to cold sores, warts, and other skin complaints.

Mental Support

  • Diffuse, or apply under nose and back of neck to stimulate and bring awareness in the morning.

Emotional Support

  • Use when we feel fearful, distrusting in divine flow and the universe, when trying to control outcomes. It supports our respiratory system, and when we're feeling overzealous we can forget to breathe. This oil gets us back into connection with our breath, and it reminds us of loving support from the divine.

Spiritual Support

  • This is my favorite way to use Arborvitae! The oil of divine grace, it brings a state of calm and trust in the unknown. I love to diffuse a few drops mixed with Breathe Respiratory blend. Breathe opens my airways for easier breathing which leads to calm and relaxation, while Arborvitae brings self-awareness. I find it enhances my spiritual practice tremendously.

Ways to use

This is a solar plexus chakra healer, so applying 1-2 drops there, or on crown of head or bottom of feet.
